Genius Products – For DOGS

A while back I did a post about Genius Products I’ve found for cats.  Well, my conscience has been bothering me a bit since I also am a dog lover, and there are tons of great products out there for dogs as well.  So, when Nina from Dogs by Nina asked me if she could guest post for me, I knew there was only one possible topic – you guessed it.  Genius Products for Dogs!

This is a collection of must-have items for people who really love their pets. Disclosure:  This post may contain affiliate links.

Guest Poster – Nina from Dogs by Nina:

Dogs are important members of the family, and if you have a dog, then you already know that. When I got my first dog, all you needed was a food bowl, a water bowl, and a leash.

Nowadays, you can get almost anything for your dog – jackets, costumes, clothes, and a Go Pro HD camera!

Let’s look at some of the coolest and new products out there for dogs right now. (Disclaimer: If you are a cat person – that’s great too! Most of the items have a similar option for felines. Here are 3 genius ideas for cats from Adrian.)

Automatic Feeder

This is a huge breakthrough for busy people – Automatic Feeders. It reminds me of the elaborate system that Doc Brown created in the Back to the Future movie to feed his dog, Einstein. That system didn’t work so well if you recall the movie, but it looks like technology has caught up.

The models that are out now work flawlessly and normally can feed up to 5 or 6 meals. They are sturdy and tough so your dog won’t be able to get to the food reservoir.

One word of caution – an automatic feeder doesn’t mean that you can leave your dog alone for days! That would be mean, and your dog would miss you very much. Dogs need attention and plenty of walks of course.

You can use the feeder to feed your dog throughout the day to prevent overeating and aid in weight control. Having an overweight dog can lead to a shorter lifespan.

Water Fountain

My dog is a tidy drinker and doesn’t splash around the water bowl like some dogs. I am thankful for that. However, he drinks a lot, so I tried to get a larger water bowl, but the water would get funky. Bacteria and algae would take hold, especially in the summer when the temperatures were warm.

After investigating, I found that the water needed to be aerated to keep it clean. That’s when I found the Drinkwell Fountain. The reservoir holds over a gallon so it lasts a few days and it stays clean. The water is constantly moving, so it stays aerated and oxygenated, and that keeps it clean. The system also has a filtering system, like a Britta filter for your dog.

House Training Dog Doorbells

House training can be challenging as all dog owners know. What’s better than a newly house trained dog? A dog that doesn’t bark or scratch the door to go out! These little bells are a great way for your dog to communicate without barking.

The bells are on a strap and provide a gentle jingle when jostled. The strap hangs on the doorknob so the dog can go to the door and jingle the bell when they need to go outside to potty.

The bells are loud enough to be heard in a normal, average sized household. You can even hear them upstairs. Imagine the “jingle bells” that you might hear around Christmas time – That’s about how loud these bells are.

Flea and Tick Preventative

Nearly all parts of the country have active populations of fleas and ticks – and they are carriers of parasites and disease. We use a preventative year round and used to apply the topical ointments and gels, like Frontline. Frontline and similar products last about 30 days and they are waterproof. Lately, we have been using Nexgard and are very happy with the results.

Doggy Boredom Buster

I think this is the coolest item for dogs. The iFetch is the ultimate in dog entertainment – the dog drops in the tennis ball and the device throws it for them – again and again. Depending on the size of your pooch, you can get the small one that throws mini-tennis balls or the large one that throws regular tennis balls.

  1. We love dogs too and there are a lot of products out there for dogs. My favorite is chew toys by Kong-they are made for strong chewers and are indestructible. My lab loved his !!!! Thanks for sharing.

  2. I love Automatic Feeder. A bit pricey but worth it, especially to ‘dog parents’ who work. Love the fact that these are battery-operated for safety. No need to worry, indeed!

  3. Adrian, Thanks for letting me share here. If anyone has questions, just let me know.

    • Yes, our dog used to have a Kong. I think those are brilliant! They have a new thing called an iFetch that throws the ball for your dog. I think that’s so clever, but my dog won’t chase one.

    • Hey Rebecca, Thanks for reading the post.
My dog is a fan of the Kongs, too! We even have the Wobbler, that keeps the dog from eating too fast. 🙂 He doesn’t like that one as much.
